2. What basic principles form the foundation of the course?
Because we believe that what we do is important but that the way we do it is more important, we attempt to teach and learn according to a set of principles that will guide the content and processes of the course. These are: compassion, mutual learning, respect, transparency, trust, and truth.
3. What do we hope to achieve?
A. Disseminating Knowledge
The class will familiarize students with a wide range of health and human rights issues affecting women globally, particularly in resource-poor countries, and with special regard for different cultural and social contexts. It also highlights promising strategies, interventions, and programs that organizations are currently using to address these issues. In addition to the instructor, the course features lectures and interviews with leading scholars and experienced practitioners.
B. Forming a Community
The class will convene a group of global citizens with similar interests in public health, women’s issues and human rights. Members of this community will engage in live discussions and collaborative exercises, forming new ties among both individuals and organizations. The goal is for participants to continue their mutual learning after the MOOC concludes.
C. Empowering Participants & Developing Social Responsibility
In addition to factual knowledge, this project aims to develop a sense of responsibility, empowerment, and connection among all participants. Through this experience, we aim for students to develop greater understanding of the role of women both as people whose rights have been abrogated over time and as leaders who are capable of contributing to a better world. The course highlights the importance of making positive change consonant with the principles of compassion, mutual learning, respect, and trust.
